How Variety Keeps Your Path to Success Interesting
What do MTV's The Grind Workout Videos have to do with your path to success? Let me explain.
Recently I had the honor of having my weight loss journey shared in Men's Health Magazine and the core of the article was not just about how I lost 100lbs, but how I kept it off for over 25 years.
One of the key lessons I learned is to change things up to keep the path to success interesting and fun.
Yes, during the interviewed I laughed about all of the ways that I changed things up to continue to stay engaged (wait for it....)
MTV's The Grind Workout Videos were literally dancers from the show doing a dance cardio workout with a DJ. This, combined with a daily 1 mile walk, made the first steps into my weight loss journey enjoyable and kept me motivated.
From there...
Tae-Bo, Insanity, P90X, water rowing, hot yoga, swimming, basketball, racquetball, saunas, running, spinning, boxing, weights, Jazzercise (yes, it's trickier than you think), Peloton....the list goes on.
The point was that I would thoroughly enjoy a phase of each and then try something new as it kept me energized, curious, engaged, and really enjoying what was truly hellish to do.
But all of those activities had a point: building a lifestyle.
Losing weight is not easy, keeping it off isn't as hard if you go about it the right way.
This is just like success with any goal or path.
Starting is terrifying. It's change, it's new, it's the potential for failure.
In fact, I wish I had a dollar for every MTV dance move I messed up and two dollars for every time I kept trying.
But once you find a groove and see improvement, it's easy to fall in love with the process.
So, no matter what your goals are in life, keep these things in mind:
Just start - It'll be scary, but do it anyway
Have a goal with mini-goals included - It won't seem as daunting to get to that finish line
By trying new approaches to your goal, you may find a hidden gem - Instead of scrolling social media for an answer, sign up for a course, hire a coach, read a book or two on the topic, go to a meetup on a topic, crowdsource ideas
Give yourself grace - Change and growth takes time, ups and downs, failure and success. Give yourself grace to move through the awkward phases and bounce back from the "well that didn't work" scenarios quickly.
No matter what it is, if you want to transform your life or make a simple change, understand that it's ok to test and try different methods.
